October 2013 Mortgage Interest Rates Fall Again

With a weaker jobs report than expected and the end of the partial Federal Government shutdown, mortgage interest rates have fallen to the lowest level since June.

Rates on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages averaged 4.13 percent with an average point of 0.8 for the week ending Oct. 24, down from 4.28 percent last week but up from 3.41 percent a year ago, according to Freddie Mac’s latest Primary Mortgage Market Survey. – See more at: http://www.inman.com/wire/mortgage-rates-drop-to-lowest-level-since-june/#!

While the rates are down from this same time period last year they are considerably lower than what had been the norm for many years.

I have several lenders I work with who cover both Arizona and Utah, single family homes, manufactured homes, FHA and VA, USDA and conventional mortgages. We have a good selection of homes to choose from making it a great time to be looking in the Page Lake Powell area for a home.

1st Big Water Dinosaur Festival A Huge Hit!

What a beautiful day for The Big Water Dinosaur Festival it turned out to be! There are so many people to thank for making this happen amidst the Federal Government Shutdown. Our planning committee is so thankful for all of the help to make this first year a success.

Enjoy the photos and click on them for the full size.

Friday was our kick off event which was a lecture from keynote speaker Dr. Joseph Sertich, PhD Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. The kids and adults enjoyed the presentation which covered paleontology from Africa to America!

Saturday was a BLAST and by the time I arrived at the festival to help with the set up there were already people milling around. It got much busier from there. The Grand Staircase Escalante Partners played a huge part of making the day a success with displays of their own and some that were borrowed, albeit last minute, from the Paleo Lab of the Monument. Four large dinosaur heads were the hit of the day! The John Wesley Powell Museum folks, including members of their board of directors, stepped up and covered not only for them but for other agencies who were shut down.

Kids had a great time in the craft are participating in an art contest and making large dinosaur masks. Funtime Inflatables had kids not only in the bounce houses but on the climbing wall. Cool art of many different varieties for sale from spray paint art to leather crafts, photography, and homemade soaps and much more.

Dance with the Dinosaur had kids and adults dancing with our large, green, dinosaur to the sounds of the band Sage (I am a guitarist and vocalists in Sage)

We are so looking forward to next year and tentatively have set September 19 – 21, 2014, for the event.

Watch our facebook page and website for a list of sponsors and volunteers who made this first year such a great experience.

As a side note, many of the old time readers here know that I am a musician and this is a pretty big deal that my band was asked to play for this event during the Dance with the Dinosaur! I am excited and really looking forward to it.

My history with the local dinosaurs goes back to 1998 when my son, David, found several Plesiosur fossils in the desert behind our home and some 200 hours the summer of 2000 that I spent helping to dig them out. Plesiosaur – think Loch Ness Monster but with a short neck and 4 foot long jaw bones swimming in the pre-historic ocean!

Here is a previous post about that event: Lake Powell Paleontology – Dinosaurs, Plesiosaurs, and much more in Glen Canyon and The Grand Staircase Monument – Part 1

That same summer another local, Merle Graffam, found a Therizinosaur. Information on it is found in this post Therizinosaur: Mystery of the Sickle-Claw Dinosaur

We have also been fortunate enough to receive some great donations as part of our hourly raffle that will be going on, as well as items for door prizes and dance prizes.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors and those who have donated to make this event possible. A huge thank you to the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument folks and Kane County Tourism!
